Quill and Ink

Quill and Ink
Parchment with quill writing and erasing.

I found making and using the quill pen a difficult challenge, but once I got the hang of the angle of the pen to paper and the right amount of ink. Using the quill changed my handwriting and required multiple strokes to successfully mark the page. I also tried my hand at erasing the parchment by scrapping away with a knife. I was impressed by how much the mark could be scratched out without impacting the page but these trials made clear how much work scribes would have to do and how errors could slow them down. With practice, I’m sure work would become easier, but the amount of labor would still create high prices and inaccessibility.
