Edition

For my edition, I proposed creating an edition of the fairytale “Rumplestiltskin.” The fairytale has been around for a very long time and has been translated into many different languages. Some sources cite examples of the fairytale being over 3000 years old, although in that form it is very different from the more well known versions. The first version which resembles modern versions was written by Johann Fischart in 1577. The most well known version of the tale was produced by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. There are, however, other version of the story which share some key similarities, but have different plots. These variations result from differences in location as well as translation. The three versions I chose are all in English, but hail from different english speaking countries. I will be using the Brother’s Grimm version of Rumpelstiltskin, an English version known as “Tom Tit Tot” and a Slavic version known as “Kinkach Martinko.” This does differ from what I covered in my proposal. As opposed to creating a new version of the fairytale, I will make a parallel edition which places the three stories beside each others and highlights similarities and differences in the thematic structures.
